DIVERSITY EXPERIENCE
Exploring Minds Development Center- I obtained my diversity practicum experience at this day care/preschool. It is owned by two sisters, one who is an occupational therapist and one who is an early childhood teacher. The day care is for children from 0-5 years of age and it provides services for children with and without disabilities. I had the opportunity to work with the preschool aged children. It was beneficial for me to observe the early intervention techniques along with how a preschool runs daily.
Family Preschool Night at BECEP- I had the opportunity to plan a short but fun reading lesson for a family night at BECEP. There were many families that attended, and most of the families had children with disabilities. I had a great time teaching with my classmates and getting to interact with all the families.
Family Mentorship Program- Throughout this program, I got the chance to meet and spend time with a family whose son has Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. I learned about the different struggles and challenges the family has had to overcome. It was a huge eye-opener for me that taught me an important lesson about diversity.
Caregiver- When I started college at the University of Mary, I was hired by a family to help take care of their daughter with severe Cerebral Palsy.I still work with her today and we have become very close friends. She has impacted my life tremendously and does not let her disability stop her from being happy.
Army National Guard Basic Training & Advanced Individual Training (AIT)- I attended basic training at Fort Jackson, SC and AIT at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. Throughout my training experiences, I met many people from all over the country and even some that were from different countries. It was amazing to meet all the people I did and learn about their cultures as well.
